Should the Church Engage in Politics?

Should the church engage in politics? In light of our conversations this morning, here’s a statement that I find exceptional:

“The story of Christendom reminds us that the attempt to Christianize the empires of this age is as easily described as the secularization of the church” (Mike Horton, The Christian Faith: A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way).

For next week, be WARNED. Education, Vocation, and Politics are in view and VanDrunen just may rock your boat at times. Given the stirring nature of the topics, we will take two weeks to cover the chapter. So read chapter 7 (pp.161-205) and come ready. If you are just joining us, know that you are welcome and that we are glad you are with us. Also know that it would be very beneficial if you quickly reviewed the first six chapters of Living in God’s Two Kingdoms. Apart from grasping the superstructure of VanDrunen’s argument, we most likely will not be on the same page for discussion.

Christians are "strangers and aliens" in this world (1 Peter 1:1). This means we are something like the exiled Israelites of old and can learn a great deal about our relation to culture from God's expectation during the exile. Our discussion on 10/2 of ch.4 was very helpful in this regard. Valuable discussion men! 10/9 will carry this further as we cover chapter 5. The next book will be a little one by B.B. Warfield called The Plan of Salvation. You can pick it up at OBC, on Amazon, or digitally for free  here.

Fall Kickoff

Its time once again to start up Theology for Breakfast. Our first meeting for the fall will be Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Omaha Bible Church from 6:30-7:30 AM. Living in God’s Two Kingdoms: A Biblical Vision for Christianity and Culture by David VanDrunen is our text. Have the first chapter read by Tuesday the 11th and if you want an audio introduction to the book, here is an interview with the author. The book is available at the OBC Well, Amazon, etc. Coffee will be ready so read, bring a friend, and be ready for some good interaction.

*David VanDrunen is scheduled to be at OBC in the fall of 2013 to speak on matters of Christ and culture.
